Is There Not A Cause?

by Bro. Julius Dayandayan

“And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?” –1 Samuel 17:29

This is the story of young David when he went to the battle between the Israelites and the Philistines. His purpose was to bring food for his broth¬ers. When he arrived in the battlefield, he heard the Philistine champion named Goliath defying the God of Israel and their army. David volunteered to fight the giant, seeing that no one dared to face him but he was scolded by Eliab, his eldest brother (v.28). David answered, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?” David knew the cause—his purpose why he wanted to fight the giant.
A cause is a reason, a purpose and a goal. God saved us from hell and He placed us in this great church because He had a cause. Christians, can we not see the cause?

1. The Cause to Live. Is there not a rea¬son why we need to live the way God wants us to live? The Bible says in 1 Cor. 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” As Christians, we should live a sanctified life that is set apart for God. Can the world see us as God’s people? Matt. 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

2. The Cause to Give. Is there not a cause to give for the Lord’s work? The Bible challenges us in Mal. 3:10 to “bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” The reason why our church vehicles can still run, why we can still fetch visitors every week, why soulwinners can still go from house to house, why we can still con¬tinue our building project—is this: some people in our church are still giving. “That there may be meat in Mine house.” The churches and mission works thrive because of giving. God blesses a giving church.

3. The Cause to Serve. The Bible says in 1 Cor. 6:19-20, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” There is a cause why we must serve God— that is because He owns us. Yes, He is our Master. He is the reason why we must get involved in soulwinning, in fetching visitors, in leading Bible studies, and in participating in the different ministries of the church.

Brethren, we have no excuse not to live for God, to give for His work, and to serve Him. Do we know our cause? Yes, God is our cause.
